Master Chief is finally back! After six years of waiting, we once again get to take on the role of the Xbox world's perhaps toughest and most iconic super soldier.

Halo Infinite is the series' biggest game to date with a large and open map for you to explore. There are a whole range of new vehicles and weapons to use, the graphics have been improved, and the game is optimised for both PC and Xbox Series X / S.

Halo Infinite has two game modes you can run - the campaign that you pay for, and a completely free multiplayer mode. Game Studio 343 has big ambitions around Halo Infinite and plans to maintain both game modes with improvements and new material for a long time.

The campaign

Put on your space armour and charge your MA40 AR - it's finally time to tackle The Banished. The breakaway group that has left The Covenant and that we got to know in the previous games has taken control of the Zeta Halo ring, and it’s up to you as Master Chief to put things right again.

Expect that it won’t be an easy task you’ll have in front of you. The games antagonist is Escharum, on of the leaders behind The Banished leader Atriox from 2017 Halo Wars 2. Escharum is not only big and terrifying in appearance, he’s also smart and has the help of a group of Spartan hunters whose task it is to find and eliminate you.

Thankfully, you’re not alone in your search for Escharum. You have a new AI to help on your journey, and she is accompanied by several other, helpful characters, who strengthen the story in Halo Infinite.

The campaign in Halo Infinite is one of the largest to date with a detailed story and large areas to explore. The game is not a so-called open-world, but you also don’t have the linear paths from the previous games.

Instead, you are freer than ever to look around and see what the world has to offer. You can choose to just take on the main missions or do the many side quests and small events that pop up around the world.

Multiplayer mode

It costs about $100 to buy the campaign, but you can actually try parts of the game for free if you want. Multiplayer mode is completely free and works with both Xbox and PC.

Playing against others is a great way to try out the controls and to see how well the game is running on your computer. It’s a good introduction before you bring out your wallet and buy the campaign (or pay for the Xbox Game Pass where the game is included).

The multiplayer mode was released a few weeks before the campaign and is regularly updated with new seasons offering different challenges and game modes. There are several different game modes such as Capture The Flag, Oddball, Slayer, Total Control, Strongholds and Stockpile.

Each game mode has different variations that give an extra twist to the experience. In the Oddball game mode, there are normally two teams with four players in each, but in the Free-for-All variation, there are no teams, instead only one player can win!

Slow progress - if you don’t buy a Battle pass

Running multiplayer mode requires you to sign in to a Microsoft account. It saves all your progress and as long as you use the same account, you can switch between different devices without losing everything you have worked on before.

When you complete the quests, you’ll get experience points that add up to unlock different looks for your Spartan character.

If you want bonus material and get that little bit extra, you can buy a Battle Pass. It’s completely optional and allows you to get more looks a little faster than those who don’t pay for a Battle Pass. You can also buy separate looks for the armour on your Spartan if you want something specific, but bear in mind that it quickly becomes quite pricey even for just a few gadgets in the game.

Co-op and map editor won’t be released until 2022

Two large parts of Halo Infinite are missing right now. You cannot play the campaign with a friend in co-op mode, nor can you create your own multiplayer courses in Forge mode.

The game studio 343 Industries has previously announced that these are ready to be released only in 2022. An early estimate is that co-op will be released about three months after the game's launch in December, the map editor is not expected to come until six months after the launch.

Play Halo Infinite with Xbox Game Pass

You can actually play parts of Halo Infinite for free. The multiplayer mode is free to download and run, but if you want to play the campaign it’ll cost you xx. At least if you buy the game.

Since Halo Infinite is included in the Xbox Game Pass, it’s possible to subscribe to the game if you prefer. The cost is from $19.95 per month and you can get a trial month for only $1 if you haven’t had an Xbox Game Pass before.
