Never, ever, ever consider buying from PC Gear.

I could copy/paste a few of the reviews that mirror my experience, but Eggman60 below pits it succinctly.

With several no-shows of my much promised refund I have commenced the laborious process of getting my bank to reverse the payment. Such was the extent of excuses and lies it was so long ago that I dont hold much hope for my bank.

Well done Darryl Lennane, you got my money for next to no outlay of your own...

Would not recommend this trader, Darryl Lennane, to anybody after 7 weeks of lies and excuses for not supplying a computer system that he charged my visa for on the day I agreed to deal.

A refund was offered but never came and he kept offering excuses as to why he couldn't make payment.

Finally got refund from my bank through visa card credit.

Have dealt with him for 5 years and previous dealings were fine but seems to have gone off the track a bit these days.

Deal with him at your own risk I say.

I understand he is working overseas until October 2012.

My inital aim of building a PC with respect to the specifications I had researched had just crashed and burned horribly and in seraching for a supplier who might have what I needed (in this instance) a Motherboard)- per the listings on Price Spy - I contacted PC Gear in Dunedin.

I sent my query through at 7:30 in the evening and I thought I might receive a response the following day - I heard back from Darryl at 10;30 that evening (clearly the man is part bat).

They didn't have what I wanted due to the supplier no longer stocking such - Darryl apolgised for this (something completely out of his control) and offered to research/ provide a list of potential substitutes.

I agreed, and listed the various stipulations per price/ performance that I had in mind.

The next morning - I received an email detailing a list of potential replacement motherboards. The email was itemised, ordered according to price, with links to product sites.

I then asked a series of dumb questions - I'm not tech savvy - and Darryl's responses, were complete, informative and, when I asked him to dumb the language down even more, understandable.

I asked Darryl for his recommendation - from what he had listed and his recommendation came back with detaisl as to why he thought it most suitable. (I was consulting wiht some techy-friends) at the same time and they agreed, independently, with Darryl's suggestion - which indicated, to me, that I was receviing INFORMED service.

It is also worth noting that Darryl DID NOT recommend the most expensive product in the price range I had supplied which speaks well of his integrity with respect to meeting client need.

So I ordered the motherboard ... and then I put an order in for a CPU and some RAM.

Once again, Darryl was informative, heplful, put up with my grumpy b/s when I got too busy doing other things to watch my manners and was generally all-around helpful.

With respect to the RAM; Darryl's supplier of what we had agreed uponand ordered, let him down and he personally, ordered a replacement (an unpgrade) and ensured it was delivered expediently (and he took the margin hit on the price differential in the RAM - essentially, his SUPPLIER let him down and he took the responsibility for their failure; excellent).

    ....

So I ordered and O/S from him - same time spent explaining things, answering mroe dumb questions and then re-routing a delivery back to me when his supplier sent the O/S to him, in Dunedin and not me, in Wellington.

    ----

    In short:
    - Outstanding service, [to the bitter end, I'd be sick of dealing with me]
    - Willingness to explain above and beyond
    - Sound technical knowledge (my tame geeks confirm this)
    - Takes responsibility for his work and the work of his suppliers
    - Interested in provinding a solution that works for the client: at no time did I feel, pressured or induced to spend more than I needed or wanted to.

10 Stars - cannot recommend highly enough.

    -----
Update: 5/7/12 - Original RAM sent incompatible with Mobo - so a lack of research done by Supplier in recommending product.

Bought new RAM while waiting for promised refund/ credit - has been nearly 4 weeks and still no sign of refund.

    Previous reviews were correct.

Commerce Commission complaint and Dispute Tribunal application pending.

Still retain some of the orioginal stars for the previous service which WAS excellent.

    ----
    Update: 20/7/12
Well - He met my deadline by a day [twice] as I extended it as he lost my account details. SO I got my refund.

The biggest issue was with response to and fulfilment of given commitments. I doubt very much Darryl has any intention of defrauding anyone and, I think, he is a good guy at heart - but, basically, he's too busy to devote a level of customer service to those things that aren't straight-forward, income-generating, transactions.

Advice: Deal with PC Gear if you can confirm they have what you want adn it works etc - I think you'll only strike problems if complications occur. Also, indpendently verify ANY and ALL technical advice you receive.

I still stand by my original rating points in terms of the original service I received.

My biggest mistake was not reading these comments before purchasing from them. I ordered and paid for a WD drive but did not receive it. They would not answer my enquiries until I threatened a credit card charge back, then they came back to say that the drive was out of stock and offerred me several that were way more expensive. I then asked for a full refund and which they agreed to, except that I NEVER received a refund and had to resort to a credit card charge back in the end. This definitely has to be the worst experience that I have ever had with a PC store. I can see a complaint to the commerce commission here.

If it was possible to award a negative rating, I surely would.
On Saturday, May 19 this year, I ordered, on-line, a Nettcomm NB6PLUS4W 4 port wireless modem router from PC Gear Dunedin. Upon receipt of an emailed invoice confirming acceptance of the order, I arranged a direct credit payment of $122.48 as payment in full and copied the details to PC Gear.
At that time, my order management history showed the order as "Queued" - totally paid - $0.00.
The bank payment went through on May 21 but there was no change made in my order status.
On May 23 I emailed PC Gear reminding them that payment had been made and attached a screen shot of the transaction details, together with a request for the modem to be in my possession that week.
According to PC Gear's web site, the product was available and ready to ship.
At 8 o'clock that night as my status was still showing "Queued", I used the online contact form to demand either a full refund of the money paid or the item ordered to be received by me within 48 hours.
In less than 10 minutes, I received an email informing me that the order had been processed successfully.
The order management now showed this to be the case - totally paid - $122.48.
I used the contact form again to acknowledge my updated status and requested advice re date of shipping.
    There was no response.
The following morning, I used the contact form to require the product to be delivered by the next day or to have my money refunded giving as grounds that there had been no reason given in justification for the unacceptable delay in updating my account and the final processing and delivery of the order.
That afternoon I emailed Lennane of stating my intention to bring this matter to the attention of the Commerce Commission on Monday 28 May in the event that I should still be without either a full refund or in possession of the specific product that I had ordered an paid for. An immediate response was requested.
The following afternoon, Lennane emailed, apologising for the poor communication and gave reasons which may or may not be valid. He gave an assurance that the order had been sent to PC Gear's suppliers and that he would confirm the delivery date to me by Monday.
Just before midnight on the 29th Lennane wrote, "Sorry about the delay in coming back to you. We are having staffing issues at present and our response time is poor.
I hate to say it but we cannot supply this item in a reasonable timeframe. It appears we were given incorrect information about its availability in the first place and I have scoured other suppliers without success. Please supply account details and we will arrange a refund. I apologise for the inability to provide the product and the poor service overall."
Although he had a record of my bank account number from the bank screen shot I had sent as proof of payment, I sent the details back to Lennane.
Surprise! Surprise! No refund has been made.
Over the preceding days, I had tried on several occasions to ring PC Gear direct on their advertised number - 03 471 8599 - only to get the disconnected signal each time.
On 31 May Telecom (126) informed me verbally that the shop telephone number had been disconnected for some time and as of that time, there was no request to hand to restore the phone service. No wonder people haven't been able to get through! One question is: what does that make Lennane in view of the fact that he had given apologies for the phone problems and had stated Telecom are having some issues with the line?
The same day, PC Gear put a notice on their website stating that they were having some issues with their phone lines.
I have since discovered that the line was disconnected approximately two weeks ago but am still no wiser as to if it/when it will be restored and can only wonder why it took so long for the notice to be put on the web site.
The second question is: what does it make Lennane if he doesn't refund my money in good time?

This morning - 7 June - I discovered, very much to my amazement, that Lennane has actually refunded my payment! However, I am not prepared to change my rating for PC Gear until I am convinced that all other disgruntled customers who have legitimately complained about not receiving refunds which should have been made have been repaid.

If I were you guys, don't bother ordering from them.

    1) Their website makes a false statement for example I tried to order the GA-990fXUD7 from them and it's saying it's in stock so that why I tried ordering from them.

    2) Got a confirmation email saying they are waiting for my payment so I paid them.

    3) It's been a week and still I haven't heard anything I tried calling them and apparently their phone line doesn't work so I emailed them saying wheres the order i requested and they are giving me excuses saying there are trying to get from another stock warehouse and should come early next week.

    4) So I waited and still nothing. So I got tired of it and ask for a full refund and it took them 2 weeks for me to get a refund. All i hear from them is excuses and it shouldn't really take that long to get a refund.l

Bottom line, no matter what you wanted get 'DON'T GET IT FROM THIS STORE!'

    THIS STORE SUCKS!

I also wish I had read reviews about PC Gear Dunedin before giving them my money.

They did not stock the item I ordered which is not a massive problem. Not answering phones or emails regarding a refund is. The only (sporadic) communication I had from them was to give me rubbish excuses as to why the refund was taking so long.

2 months later Visa has reversed the transaction and I have my money back.

Total frustration, time wasted and money wasted on overdue bank fees thanks to PC Gear Dunedin.

Edit: Money refunded so I've increased rating slightly. They emailed several times to ask to have the rating improved.

Wish I had read some of the earlier reviews on here before ordering. It turns out prices listed on their website are not actually correct! They emailed today to say they're not processing my order, after an order I made yesterday. Hope to have my money refunded asap, will not use again.
Also their website was painfully slow to load anything.

I ordered two Samsung external hard drives from this Vendor through their web site beginning of March -12, one week later I got an e-mail telling me the drives are not in stock and there is no ETA on them (it clearly stated they where in stock ready to ship). I ask to have my money refunded and I was promised a refund. Four weeks later there is no refund, they don't answer their phones. It finally took my credit card company to reverse the charges and all the hassles that go with that.
I'm not judging anybody here only stating facts and hopefully no one else has to experience what I did. It seams I'm not the only one that had a nightmare with them should have read the reviews that's what they are for!

I purchased a Netcomm modem. It was not available at usual retailers but I have successfully used them for many years and they are recommended by my ISP. Saw them available at this Dunedin mail order company and as I live in Dunedin and the price was good, ordered at 1.30pm. Was very pleasantly surprised when it arrived at my door just after 7pm the same day.

I placed an order for a MSI video card with PC Gear. They were very helpful in trying to source this card as there were limited stock at the time.

Upon certain events that were out of PC Gear's control, their supplier was out of stock after the fact that I had placed the order. What makes PC Gear great is that they went out of their way to source another card to fulfill my order. Their constant communication kept me in the loop through the whole process. And in my books that's true customer service.

I'm happy with the card and very happy with PC Gear's service.

I found PC Gear in Dunedin to be an excellent company to deal with. Outstanding communication and support. They went out of their way to make sure that I was happy with my purchases. I would glady deal with them again, and I look forward to doing so in the near future. I would also like to add a special thanks to Darryl Lennane for his professional and friendly service. He went over and above the call of duty to find an out of stock item for me. Well done :-) Highly recommend. A++++

I ordered a video card from these guys for our company in Auckland, as it was the only one I could find in the country at the time.
It arrived in an acceptable timeframe and I was kept up to date with any new information about the order.

Their service does beat some big players up here in Auckland so that says something.

There's some obvious underhanded activity from competition Dunedin stores in the reviews here. I suggest they take their bad habits back overseas with them.

PC Gear has been around for years, and it certainly isn't 'dodgy'.

    - Quick communication feedback even outside store hours
    - Good prices

Bought a printer from these guys. Their Web site showed a machine which was not available but they got back to me with another option which was fine. There was a glitch with delivery so they arranged for me to get my printer locally which was much appreciated. It all took a bit longer than I had hoped but they did come through and they did work through the glitches. I'd buy from these guys again in the future.

very happy. I reckon I must have been dealing with different people than the rest of you cos those stories look pretty woeful, but I've used PC Gear twice now.
first time had minor delay on the kit, but communication was clear and concise and I expected it to be a tough call to source the specific part I was after.
second time Vid card arrived next working day.
Darryl at the shop answered some pretty late night correspondence from me and went out of his way to source stuff that nobody else had access to at the time.
as part of the 2nd order he ordered a PSU that nobody else could get hold of for me, let me know there'd be a 2 week wait, and it was here in about 9 days. underpromised and over delivered.. that's brilliant stuff as far as I'm concerned.

I can see loads of upset people here, but I would have no qualms using their service again. maybe the 'stories' about staffing issues were true and he's sorted them now.

Ordered 2 motherboards from these guys, I sent a follow up email which they replied to once payment was received and they sent the order off to their supplier....thing is their supplier said they had stock when they didn't. So I didn't get the boards when I expected.

This is where the 9 stars comes from, at this point they could have said wait or it is the suppliers problem now, but one of the guys there when above and beyond on the customer service front found dome new boards, one email coming in to suggest a board at 20 past midnight on Sunday morning....truly dedication to work there,

If this is the kind of service that PC Gear gives then I would shop there again.

Gosh I wished I had used Pricespy!

Being new to Dunedin, when I went looking for a PC supplier I happened to come across PC Gear. I ordered a new screen which I was informed should arrive at the shop in a few days. That was nearly 2 weeks ago and still nothing.

Now the shop appears to be closed more often than it is open, and there is no response to email or phone.

I would strongly recommend anyone contemplating doing business with PC Gear to THINK AGAIN!

PC Gear has so much potential and yet they are wasting it by pissing off their customers.

I ordered a simple part which should have taken a couple of days to arrive in stock and yet it took 3 weeks.

A week before my part arrived I was told by the store clerk Tom that my part was in town and was even shown the tracking information.
My product was in either the suppliers store OR in the owners PO Box but Tom didn't know which isn't his fault.

I came in the next day which was the Saturday of Queens Birthday and was told by the Owner Darryl that my product was in fact in Dunedin and at the supplier but because I came in at 1pm that it would have to wait till Tuesday because the supplier was closed; I had been trying all morning to get a hold of PC Gear on the phone but the line was either discoed or busy.

Tuesday came around and no product; Tom didnt know where it was and couldnt get a hold of the owner Darryl who was the only person who DID in fact know where my product was.

Wednesday still no product but was told by Darryl to come in at 5pm the next night and he will have it ready for me.

Thursday night 4:45pm came in to the store to finally pick up my product but no Darryl.
Waited till 5:30 when the store closed with a couple of other people waiting on Darryl to show up also.
Was told I would have my product the next day at 3pm.

Came in to PC Gear on Friday to pick up my product at 3pm as arranged but no Darryl and no product so I told them i would be back by 5PM and would not be leaving until I had my product as Darryl was supposed to be coming by with a bunch of peoples orders.

Came back at 5pm, and waited for Darryl with 3 other people also waiting on Darryl to arrive until 6:30 when the store closed; No Darryl.

I txted and emailed Darryl when I got home letting him know that I needed my product the next day but didnt hear back from him.

The next day I am waiting for an email or txt from Darryl letting me know he has my product because apparently he had already picked it up a couple of days ago after it was sitting at the suppliers waiting on him. I didn't receive any messages from Darryl so I rang up PB tech in Dunedin to find out if they had my item in stock which they did.
I rang PC Gear and surprise surprise Darryl was not there to talk to me but I told Tom that if Darryl didnt have my product in 1 hour I would be going to PB tech since they had it in stock and didn't mind paying the extra price for it.

Got a txt from Darryl a couple minutes later telling me he would have my item with in the hour.
Almost 2 hours later I receive another txt letting me know he has my item and its ready for pick up.

That afternoon I went to PB tech to have a look at PC cases and found one I liked for I purchased it and let the sales man know I wouldn't be needing the item I placed on hold as PC gear FINALLY came through after 3 weeks.
The salesman at PB tech showed me proof that Darryl purchased the item I ordered 3 weeks ago from PB tech not 2 hours before proving to me Darryl was lying for a whole week about having my product.

Do not buy from PC Gear; buy from a reputable company that gets products with in reasonable amount of time or you will regret it.

Where did my comment go to on this ?

This store is useless, ran by people with no clues about IT in any such way - couple years ago they sold me a dodgy graphics card which I had to return, and lately they suggested a laptop to me for almost double the price elsewhere and said it was a good laptop for playing games on...

Also, their physical store has nothing in it apart from a few cases which pretty much to me says they're scammers.

Why would any business buy a physical store and put no stock in it, and have useless people working there...

Not recommended, unless of course you like being scammed then go ahead!

I orderd a GTX470($600) from them 4 weeks ago, then they lie, lie, lie that there is suddenly a problem with their supplyier's, then they will never reply to your calls, emails, and getting your money back takes months obviously(maybee never). I feel that recommending this place as a "NEVER GOTO THIS STORE IN YOUR LIFE BECAUSE YOU WILL LOSE YOUR MONEY!" is a fair comment.

We bought a PC from PC Gear Dunedin last year in February. Delivery delay was 6 weeks and when we finally got it, it was only working for about 2 weeks. We had the motherboard and the graphics card replaced within the next 4 month and also got given 2 different Windows activation discs that both did NOT work. Our PC kept on shutting down and freezing and was not usable at all. The third activation disc finally activated Windows however our PC was still not working and the system kept on freezing and shutting down only minutes after we started the PC. The graphic cards fan was very noisy and although we complained about it many times, nothing has ever happened to fix that problem. After 6 month we asked for a full refund as the PC was still not working and we had to drop it back to the shop many times. PC Gear refused a refund because in their opinion we didn't give them the chance to fix the PC properly and according to the shop owner he could never find anything wrong with the computer and only replaced the motherboard and graphics card as precautionary steps. We took the computer to the ITS Help desk at the University of Otago so that a third independent person could have a look at it. The Manager there gave us a written confirmation that the PC is not working the way a new PC should work and that this is not acceptable. We contacted the Citizens Advice Bureau to help us out with the problems we had with PC Gear, however PC Gear still claimed that the PC was fine and we should give it back to them so that they could have another look at it. Finally, we lodged a claim with the Disputes Tribunal and won the case. Still, PC Gear wouldn't pay us out and we could not get hold of the shop owner at all. We contacted the collections unit and they sent out a bailiff to collect the money for us. We FINALLY received our money after 12 month of endless fighting to get the PC refunded. Thanks PC Gear for making our life so miserable during the last year. I'd have never thought that trading with a Senior Sergeant would be that aweful. Shocking!

I some a case from this company, it wasn't available and they refused to give me my money back even though on their website they said they had it in stock. After a few months and having to open an account with Baycorp to try and retrieve my money they said that I could just order some other stuff from the site up to the value of the original purchase which I did and all they sent me was a mousepad. After a few more months and some tense emails I finally got my good. In all the process probably took 3 or 4 months and was the worst experience that I've had dealing with a store. Would highly recommend that people steer clear of this business.

I had a really bad experience ordering from PC Gear Dunedin. These guys are completely useless and I don't recommend that anyone purchase from them. Here's what happened.

Friday: Made order and paid by credit card so I could get it as quickly as possible. They didn't even process the order until the following day.
Monday: Called hoping to get tracking details. Was told I'd be emailled them soon.

Tuesday: Called again for tracking details as item had not arrived and never recieved an email. Was told I'd be emailed back within 10 mins.

Wednesday: Called again. Was told a story about supplier sending something that went missing, and another item had now been sent. Given a tracking number which turned out to be false and didn't register with the courier at all. Later recieved an email admitting that nothing had been shipped, and saying the supplier gave the wrong levels. They were now trying a different supplier.

Thursday: Told again that it was all the suppliers fault. I demanded a definite ETA or a refund. They said it would definitely be with me by Monday so I agreed to wait.

Monday: Still no item or tracking info. It took until Tuesday to get a response. They tell me that still nothing has been sent. I demanded a refund ASAP.

Do not go near these guys. I can handle some delays, but I hate being misled and that's all these guys do.

Service and communication was very good. However I was initially sent the wrong product by their supplier. I had to pay $8 for couriering the wrong product back to them because of a mistake that their supplier made. Giving them benefit of the doubt this was probably not PC Gear Dunedin's fault because their supplier sent the wrong product, but still the purchase was not all smooth-sailing.

Took 6 weeks and repeated requests to get a full refund after cancelling the order, would not deal with them again.
